mrburberry-fox asked: Hi, my names Alex and I kinda want to pick your brain for a bit, if you don't mind. So I'm looking for a school to attend to study fashion design, I was looking into Istituto Marangoni in London. Manily that campus bc of language barriers with the other campuses. What are your thoughts on that school? Where did you attend school? Any schools you think I should look into? Thanks for taking your time to read this :)
hi alex. thanks for writing!
well, it’s funny you should mention it, i actually attended marangoni but the original campus in milan. honestly, it was the hardest i’ve ever worked and been pushed creatively and i loved every moment of it. i’m sure the professors are different now (i was there more years ago than i’d like to admit) and on the whole not sure what the reputation of the school is anymore.
when i was there they were just starting the london campus so i never heard much about it. marangoni was definitely the best school in milan (and apart from polimoda in florence, in all of italy) just as central st martins is prob best in england.
re the language situation- just an fyi, istituto marangoni in milano has an english program as well, so you are in the same school, same classes but they have them both in italian and in english. i did the italian track but know a lot of people who did the english one and it was just as good, so if that’s more your comfort level it’s a good option.
i think it’s super smart that you’re looking to study in europe (i’m assuming you’re american, but correct me if i’m wrong). it will open your eyes in so many ways and you will learn so much. also, not to be unfair to all the FIT and Parsons students out there, but the quality of work that comes out of schools in europe is far and away better than what the fashion schools here produce (on the most part). this is from my experience, knowing what my peers from milano achieved, where they went to work and what their portfolios looked like.. vs what i saw when i interviewed interns and assistants coming out of the nyc-based fashion schools.
so, while i can’t speak to the london marangoni campus specifically, i will say that the school is excellent and has a lot of good connections, can provide opportunities for you and is better than what you’ll find in the states.
hope that helps and sorry it to me a moment to reply!
let me know what you decide on, and good luck!
