HBO Documentary About Face: Supermodels Then and Now
“Have you had a facelift? Well, if you had the ceiling falling down in your living room, would you not go and have a repair?” – Carmen Dell’Orefice
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’s new documentary About Face: Supermodels Then and Now is a documentary that explores the early careers and present-day lives of the some of the most iconic faces of the fashion world. Conversations with supermodels including Marisa Berenson, Isabella Rossellini, Pat Cleveland, Jerry Hall, Bethann Hardison, Paulina Porizkova, Christy Brinkley, Beverly Johnson and more, reveal the changing roles of women, race, and beauty in a society that has grown increasingly obsessed with youth. Going beyond the skin’s surface, the film also traces the influence of models themselves, a profession which was once likened to prostitution.
One can only hope that Greenfield-Sanders turns his intimate lens next to the girls that followed in these ladies’ heels, as the hints of Jerry Hall’s debaucherous Studio 54 days may have nothing on the days when Linda refused to get out of bed for less than $10,000 dollars a day.
About Face: Supermodels Then and Now airs on HBO, July 30th.
